NAWOU Handmade is a social enterprise through which economic empowerment opportunities are provided to groups of women artisans. The initiative specifically aims at amplifying the women’s entrepreneurial skills and potential to fashion artistic handmade products. NAWOU Handmade promotes product design, production and marketing, as well as a capacity-building while instituting opportunities for economically disadvantaged women. Handmade is NAWOU’s oldest project and has been running since 1993.
NAWOU Handmade authors a variety of entrancing and heartful handicrafts such as baskets, jewellery, placemats, and wall hangings. The products have intricate designs that usually take the women hours to craft and weave by hand. As our products span across the regions of Uganda they portray different aspects of Uganda’s cultural heritage. Raw materials include raffia, sisal, banana fibre and bark-cloth; materials which are environmentally friendly and biodegradable.
Through our membership with the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), NAWOU serves as a market link for fair trade crafts locally, regionally and internationally. The exports are distributed as widely as to New Zealand, USA, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada, among others.
By buying beautiful handmade, environmentally friendly products from NAWOU Handmade your support:
- A marginalized woman who did not have an opportunity to enrol, stay and complete formal education because her society does not value girlchild education or discriminates girls and women with disabilities and those living with HIV/AIDS.
- A woman without access to land and finances through enabling her to access finances to start and sustain a business.
- A mother and her children with food on the table, education, health care and clothing.
To serve the demand of the local market, we have a well-equipped outlet located at the Uganda Museum, one of the tourist centres in the country. We also have a local outlet for bulk purchases at the NAWOU offices in Old Kampala.
